RESTAURANTS ETC

These tend to open in line with shops, i.e. closed Sunday pm & Monday.

In Ambazac there is an excellent restaurant at the Hotel Les Voyageurs (booking necessary), plus a reasonably priced café/bar which serves lunches.

If you are in Limoges we can recommend the cafeteria above the Le Clerc hypermarket in Limoges , open for lunch to 2.30 & evenings Tuesday to Saturday. In the centre of Limoges follow the locals at lunchtime & sit at trestle tables at the restaurants in les Halles (market) - follow signs for Parking Le Motte.

THINGS TO DO

Outside Amabazac, on the road to la Jonchere, there is the Plan d’eau de Jonas, a small leisure lake with a beach & facilities such as pedaloes & wind surfing.

A bit further afield (approx 30 minutes) there is the larger Lac de St Pardoux, with 3 separate ‘sites’, all with sandy beaches and picnic areas. At the ‘site de Santrop’ there are plenty of facilities, including a water splash & refreshments.  To get there, go straight across at the traffic lights in la Jonchere, heading for St Leger la Montaigne.  Follow signs for Razes & the lake is signposted from there.

Further away is the largest lake complex in the region, the Lac de Vassiviere, where there are lots of activities during July & August, including a tree-top adventure park.  Take the road through Chatelus & on to Bourganeuf. Vassivierre is signposted from there, and is approx 65 minutess from the house.

At Chatelus there are some facilities, including kayaks, alongside the river Taurion.

In Limoges, close to the airport, there is a pleasure park, Bellevue , with various activities advertised, including water slides.

Outside Gueret there is a wolf sanctuary, Les Loupes de Chabrières.

The nearest golf course is at Bourganeuf, ½ hour away.

Steam Train Journeys – from Limoges on certain days during the summer, see website link below for more details.

Le Labyrinthe, Gueret.  Giant maze (supposedly the largest in the world!) covers two hectares and borders a 3,000 hectare forest. There are also picnic areas in the park and giant games (including a giant chess board with pieces).  Opens every day 13h00 to 19h30 from 8 - 24 April, 1st July - 31st August, and weekends and bank holidays from 1st September -1st November.

The range of fishing venues in the Limousin region is simply enormous. At least 12 lakes are open all year round for fishing, and most of the other lakes offer fishing during the season.

SOME PLACES OF INTEREST

One of the ‘must sees’ is the war memorial at Oradour- sur- Glane, where there is an entire village which was devastated by the Nazis & has been left untouched since the tragedy took place. There are several towns worth a visit if you enjoy historic mediaeval buildings, such as Benevent l’Abbaye, Bourganeuf, St Leonard de Noblat  & La Souteraine. Limoges itself is also worth looking at, as it is not a very large city & the sights can be seen in one day. In the ancient la Cite is the cathedral of St Etienne, and there is a pleasant area alongside the River Vienne, with picnic spots & children’s play area.  A bit further afield, the town of Aubusson is famous for tapestry making.

Rochechouart is a beautiful little walled town roughly 45km west of Limoges with a handsome Château that stands at the town's edge.

Even further afield is the Mediaeval-Renaissance town of Perigueux , with weekly markets which we have heard are a foodie’s delight and well worth a visit. There are Farmers’ markets every day from 8.00 to 13.00 & a big regional market every Wednesday & Saturday, again from 08.00 to 13.00.

How Do I get there?

Flights to Bellegarde Airport with Ryanair from East Midlands, London Stanstead, Bristol (from 2/7/09), Edinburgh (from 31/3/09) & Liverpool.  Flybe operate flights from Newcastle & Southampton.  Rail travel is also possible, the journey from Paris takes approximately 3 hours.  By road, the A20 motorway cuts through the region.

o        The northern Chanel ports are approximately 10 hours drive.

o        The road journey is quicker if one takes the longer crossings to Boulogne, Dieppe or Caen.
